But there's a lot more to THRAKIAN than melodic doom/death. There are sludge here, and the post-metal influences are impossible to miss. What really gets me is how much melodic heavy rock they manage to bring into all that darkness. The riffs are heavy as hell, but there's so much groove and melody going on.
And the vocals? Absolutely brilliant. Some of the best I've heard on a new release in a long time. They fit the music perfectly and make that dark, atmospheric sound even more powerful. I can't imagine these songs working nearly as well without them.
"Ancient Glory" is fantastic. More than twelve minutes long, but I couldn't care less about the running time when the music is this good. The heavy riffing is something else, and the way the band moves between different styles keeps the whole thing interested the whole time. There's no sense of them dragging things out just to make a long song.
The title track is just as good, although there's more post-metal coming through here. And there's something about the groove on this one. Dirty groove. That's probably the best way I can describe it. Those rough, heavy riffs against the dark melodies work incredibly well, and when the atmospheric guitar solos come in, it just gets better.
That's what makes this album so good for me. You get the raw, heavy sludge, the melancholic doom/death feeling, the atmospheric post-metal and those almost hard rock-like melodies and grooves. None of it feels out of place. It all belongs together.
And then "In the Grips of Illusion" closes the album in brilliant fashion.
I actually felt a little disappointed when it ended. Not because of the music, but because it was over. I wanted more. So there's only one solution to that: play the damn thing again.
Four tracks, around 35 minutes, and very little I can find to complain about. The vocals are outstanding, the riffs are fantastic, and there's enough melody, atmosphere and dirty groove here to keep me coming back.
The Way is an album I'll be listening to many more times. That's for damn sure.
Rating: 9/10
