Sometimes you just have to love the algorithms, especially when bands like Eternal Mourn suddenly appear. The band consists of experienced musicians from different projects, who have now come together to play doom/death, and it sounds so fucking good.

You really get a feeling of longing, sorrow and pain, with a melancholic atmosphere hanging over the entire EP. Throughout these three songs, you are pulled into the band’s own little darkness. What I enjoy the most are all the shifts between the slower parts and the slightly more uptempo sections, before the music falls back into the heavy and sorrowful atmosphere again. That really works here.

The guitar carries a lot of the melancholy, with heavy riffs and sorrowful melodies working side by side. There is plenty of weight here.The melodic guitar adds another layer to the music, while the drums and bass give the heavier sections real power. It feels familiar if you already enjoy classic 90s doom/death, but Eternal Mourn give it enough personality to avoid sounding like just another copy.

Winds of Sorrow consists of three tracks, all over seven minutes long. This gives the band enough time to build the atmosphere and let each song develop naturally. Nothing feels rushed, and the changes in tempo keep the songs interesting.

“Falling Tears” sets the mood straight away with its heavy riffs and melancholic guitar. “Embracing Tragedy” continues in the same dark direction, mixing melody and heaviness while moving between slow and more energetic sections. The title track brings everything together and closes the EP in a satisfying way.

The vocals are raw and full of emotion, and you can really feel the pain in every note. The growling fits the music perfectly and gives the heavier sections even more power.

The production makes this sound like a band that has been playing together for a long time. The quality is top notch, while every instrument gets its chance to shine. It sounds clear and powerful without losing the darkness and raw feeling that the genre needs.

This is absolutely an EP I recommend checking out. Three tracks and just under 23 minutes may not sound like much, but Eternal Mourn manage to create something that stays with you after it ends. Now we can only hope this eventually leads to a full-length album.

Dissentient – Black Galactic Review: Progressive Death Metal from Canada (2026)
