Coma Control are a progressive death metal band from Tampere, Finland, and Shed the Sleep is their second full-length album. 

There was something about this dark and melancholic sound that capture me right away , and made me curious.

There`s a lot happening on this album. At times it becomes chaotic, but it is technical and controlled, and most of the changes work really well. The music can go from heavy and aggressive to something much more atmospheric before changing direction again. Normally, this amount of change could easily become a mess, but Coma Control know what they are doing.

The longer tracks made me skeptical at first , because this can easily loose my interest, that is not the case here. At times this is pure chaos, but it is technical and controlled chaos. There are changes everywhere, heavy parts, calmer atmospheric sections and some really technical playing. Every time I thought I knew where the music was going, something new showed up.

The heavy riffs and technical guitar playing are probably what I noticed the most. The guitars are sharp, full of great riffs , also couple of good soloes. The way these songs are built..i think is one of the biggest strengths of the album. Even the longer tracks managed to hold my attention all the way through, and that is not easy with this much chaos.

The clean vocals and growling work surprisingly well together. Everyone who reads this blog knows that clean vocals in death metal can easily ruin things for me, but here it works. There is enough variation in the vocals, and the clean parts never take over the whole thing. The growling gives the music the weight it needs, while the clean vocals fit the melancholic parts.

Post Aware is the clear highlight for me. The whole song hit me, and there was so much happening that I was just dragged into their universe. This is one of those tracks where you stop doing other things and just sit there listening, because you want to hear what happens next.

Coma Control are not reinventing the wheel with Shed the Sleep, and there are several elements that bring Between the Buried and Me to mind. They don't sound exactly alike, but I can hear some similarities in the technical playing, all the shifts and the way the songs are built. Still, Coma Control are beginning to find their own sound here, and I am curious to hear where they go next.

Shed the Sleep is absolutely an album I will listen to several more times. There is a lot to take in, and one listen is probably not enough. Technical, heavy, melancholic and chaotic, but somehow they keep control of it all. This caught my interest from the beginning and kept it all the way through.
