Flykt Interview: Swedish Black Metal Band Talks Sinister Strain (2026).

Flykt is a name that deserves more attention. This year they released their second album, Sinister Strain, seven years after their debut Charnel Heart — and it's a record that combines aggression with real melodic depth. I reached out to talk about the long road to this album, what drives their sound, and what comes next.

1. For those who haven't discovered Flykt yet, how would you describe the band, and how did everything get started?
The band formed in 2016. I joined shortly after, and the first album, "Charnel Heart," was released in 2019. The following seven years have been devoted to the creation of our second album, "Sinister Strain," which was released this June.

2. Where did the name Flykt come from, and does it hold a special meaning for the band?
Since I wasn't present at ground zero, the band was already active and the name was set when I came in to the picture. I interpret the band's name as translating it to "taking flight," that is to say "elevation" or "ascension."

3. Your latest release, Sinister Strain, made a strong impression on me. Looking back now, are you happy with how the album turned out, or is there anything you would have done differently?
Very. There's really nothing I'd change and I consider the album to be fully complete. It has gone through so many trials throughout these years that we knew when it came to recording that there would be no gaps.

4. The album combines aggression with a strong melodic side. When you're writing new music, what usually comes first—the riffs, the melodies, or the overall atmosphere?
It's from case to case. A first spark can take many different shapes.

5. Is songwriting something that happens naturally within the band, or do you spend a lot of time refining and changing songs before they feel finished?
Everything gets the time it needs. We are always open to implementing new ideas and let everything breathe. Nothing is considered to be fully done before we know the final tracklist and see our work as a single unit, being able to look at everything from different angles.

6. Every band has influences, but I always find it more interesting to ask: what do you think makes Flykt sound like Flykt?
I'd like to think there is a certain nerve, a sense of genuine vulnerability without any safeguards in the final outcome. Whether it's aggression, bliss or surrender, I'd like to think it can be felt as well as heard. It's quite difficult for me to judge my own work from an objective standpoint but that would be my guess.

7. Was there one particular song on Sinister Strain that was especially challenging—or especially rewarding—to write?
The whole album has been extremely rewarding to create since we put so much care into every aspect and it all was delivered in a correct way. Everything from artwork, the sound production, the recording itself and the people we had the pleasure of collaborating with - it all goes hand in hand. The album as a whole has encompassed both hardship and triumph and I can't really highlight a certain part.

8. The black metal scene is packed with great bands. Do you ever feel pressure to stand out, or do you simply write the music you want to hear yourselves?
My insight into the current scene is quite limited. I draw inspiration from a wide array of music and don't really keep myself up to date. We create what we feel suits our needs and Flykt becomes what it becomes, really. There is no plan how to force the stream in a certain direction but rather follow it, and the rest falls into place organically.

9. Looking back at everything you've accomplished so far, what moment has meant the most to the band?
At this moment, having Sinister Strain released. It was not a certainty. The obstacles have been many and we have been forced to work tooth and nail to see it through.

10. Finally, what can fans expect from Flykt over the next year? More live shows, new music, or something else?
Only time will tell. I have nothing to highlight at the moment.

Bonus: Is there a song by another band that you wish you had written yourselves?
Nothing comes to mind.
