This is a difficult album to review for me, simply because Dies Irae is my first encounter with Moshquito. After some reading up on the band, I found a fair amount of negative opinions around this record , most of the criticism pointing to a lack of development and a missing progressive edge the band apparently had before.

For me, that might actually be a good thing.

I came into this without any old favourites in the back of my head. I'm not listening for what Moshquito once was. I'm hearing this as a death/thrash album, and for that Dies Irae works pretty well.

There's a lot that hits right. The album has a dirty, brutal and direct feel to it, though I miss more energy in some places. There are sections that feels a bit flat, and a few more tracks that really kick harder would have lifted the whole thing. That said, this is a solid album, especially when the band finds the right balance between weight, riffs and aggression.

The standout tracks for me are Product of Society and Hang 'Em High. These deliver the thrash feeling I like ,more drive, more energy, more of what makes the album wake up.

Instrumentally there's also alot to like. The guitar work is strong, with plenty of heavy riffs throughout, and the drums give the album a brutal punch. Blast beats and hard-hitting passages lift the expression, and when it all clicks, there's a great harmony between the technical, the filthy and the aggressive.

The vocals fit the sound well ,sitting somewhere between thrash and death metal, with growls and fry screams adding character. It's a vocal style that makes the music rawer without feeling overdone.

Production is also worth mentioning. It gives the album a dirty sound, and that suits the music perfectly. This was never meant to be polished. Dies Irae sounds filthy, brutal and like an album that gives you the finger.

Not a perfect record. It lacks energy in places, and some tracks need more drive. But the riffs are there, the vocals are strong, the production is dirty in the right way, and the best tracks show that Moshquito still have plenty to offer.

In for some dirty and brutal attitude ?

Rating: 7/10

I'll be spinning more albums — stay tuned!
